ALLOMPORPH
An allomorph is one of two or more complementary
morphs ( the phonetic realizationof morpheme), which manifiest a morpheme in
its different phonological or more morph (surface form) in different
environments. These morph are called allomorph.
Allomorph is the variant of morphem. The variant
morphem is found in pronunciation, or the allomorphs of morpheme are deruved
from phonological rules and anny morphme rules that may apply to that morphem.
Example of allomorph:
The plural morp in in english, usually written as
(S), has at least three allomorphs:
- (s) as in hats haets
- (z) as in dogs dogz
- (iz) as in boxes baksis
The past form morpheme (ed) usually has also three
allomorphs
- (d) as in slammed slaemd
- (t) as in slliped sllpt
- (id) as in stilted stlltd
The negative morpheme changes “n” the prefix (in) to the
consonant of the word it prefixes:
- (II) as in illegal I’Ii:gl
- (Im) as in impatient Im’petfn
- (Ii) as in irregular Iregjele(r)
- (In) as in inconsiderate Inken’sIderet
